Vic: Cooler weather slows Big Desert blaze
Victorian firefighters battling the state's biggest bushfire in 20 years have beengiven a reprieve as extreme weather conditions ease.
So far the massive blaze, which has burnt out 178,000 hectares of bush and farmland, has only claimed one property -- belonging to racing car driver LARRY PERKINS.
Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman MICHAEL LEONARD saysif the moderate conditions continue, the fire could be contained by tomorrow night.
The fire's most dangerous front -- the north-east corner near the Mallee Highway -was moving towards private property yesterday.
But Mr LEONARD says control lines are keeping the fire at bay.
About 300 firefighters are battling the blaze, using four firebombing aircraft andfive light reconnaissance planes.
Meanwhile, a Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services spokesman says a grass fire innorth-west Melbourne overnight came close to homes, but was contained within 40 minutes.
