Fed: Jackie Kelly welcomes EPO test approval
Sports Minister JACKIE KELLY has welcomed the International Olympic Committee's approval
of tests for the banned performance-enhancing drug EPO at the Sydney Games.
Ms KELLY says the introduction of the new test means Sydney will have the world's toughest
drug testing program.
EPO, or ERYTHROPOIETIN, is the drug at the heart of the 1998 Tour de France doping
scandal and is believed to be widely used by athletes in endurance sports and events such
as long-distance running and cycling.
The IOC's ruling executive board overnight backed a recommendation from IOC legal experts
that the combined blood and urine tests should go ahead.
Ms KELLY says the decision vindicates the $1.5 million the federal government spent
funding research for the tests, which were developed by Australian and French scientists.
